Validation of buried faults presence in Lower Vendian terrigenous formations: Chayandinsky oil and gas condensate field

High degree of heterogeneity is typical of the Lower Vendian terrigenous sequences within the Chayandinsky oil and gas condensate field. Reservoir rocks are often shaled out both laterally and through the section. Matching of well columns is rather difficult, even if they are closely spaced. In order to clarify this sudden lithological variability, the authors created correlation charts, geological sections, and carried out paleo-structure reshaping. Graphical constructions lead to the conclusion that Lower Vendian terrigenous formations are often dislocated by buried intrastratal faults; though, the results of seismic exploration make it possible to reliably identify only disjunctive dislocations fixed at the surface of the Vendian terrigenous sequences. Faults play an essential role in hydrocarbon pools formation, preservation, and development; but the more urgent problem for today is the use of methods capable, together with seismic exploration, of confident fixing position of faults, including those buried. An integrated approach can be recognised to be one of these methods, where stratigraphic cycle analysis is applied based on the unity of the contradictory phenomena, namely: inheritance of evolution/development, and its continuous variability.
